Tweet tweet, SocialMail hatches twitter functionality, version 0.2 released

by on Feb.21, 2010, under SocialMail

It’s been a few weeks since SocialMail 0.13 was released and I’ve been busy in the mean time.   If you’ve read my last few posts you’ll know that the interface as been redone to allow a lot more information to be displayed while keeping the most recent details up front.

The interface has been converted to a tab based layout which allows us to have different screen areas for each information source, while allowing the front tab, to show the latest details from each section (user configurable).

SocialMail v0.2 also includes the first cut of twitter functionality, which once enabled adds a new tab which show the last 10 or so (configurable) tweets from whoever you’re viewing.   Users can now ‘tweet’ directly from Thunderbird with the new ‘Update Status’ functionality which will ultimately allow sending updates to multiple micro-blogging sites (twitter, myspace, facebook, linkedin, etc) as modules for those sites are added.

All  in all, a lot has gone into this SocialMail update, which is why it’s taken longer than anticipated, so I hope you all enjoy it and look forward to hearing your experiences with it.

So here it is: SocialMailv0.2.1

(NOTE: This is a small update to address 2 isssues raised by Larry)

Have Fun,

Daniel

First thanks for the great plug-in

Where should I put the login info for facebook?
I can’t see the pics of my contacts in the social mail side bar.

    I’m using thunderbird 3.01 and Socialmail 0.21

I can not use the tab option either, coud you give me some ideas on what to do?

    Thanks

    Hi Alejandro,

There is nowhere to put log in details for Facebook at this stage, I am using publicly available images only at this stage. Down the track I will be adding better Facebook functionality so image collection from there will improve.

I’m not sure what you mean by “tab option”, are you refering to the Front Tab Options in the preferences window? If so please let me know exactly which options you are have problems with.

    Regards,
    Daniel

    Looking good! :-)

One suggestion: When I check out emails in the ‘Sent’ folder it always shows my (the sender) info. Shouldn’t it be showing the information of the recipient instead when in this folder?

    Hi Evert,

I’ve considered this before, however, I haven’t come up with a solution on what to do when there are multiple recipients. It doesn’t seem right to just show the first recipient, and there’s not the space to show multiple. Any suggestions?

Was looking forward to get this installed … and still am. I get the message: “Add-on cannot be installed not compatible with Firefox 3.0.5″

Just updated Firefox to 3.6. Result:
“Add-on cannot be installed, not compatible with Firefox 3.6″

    Hi,

Thanks for trying to give SocialMail a go. In order to install it into Thunderbird, you need to save the plugin to your computer, to do this right click on the download link, and select “Save link as”.

Once you’ve saved it, go into Thunderbird and select “Add-ons” from the “Tools” menu. Click “Install…” in the window that appears and then point it at the plugin file that you saved in the first step.

    Hope this helps,
    -Daniel

Hi, It would be fantastic to have all my social media and email in one program and that’s why I love Thunderbird, however when trying to load it says this isn’t compatible with my version (I do the auto updates so I think I’m 3.1.1 now). Will you be making a version available soon – it sounds so good!

Thanks for the effort you put into creating such useful tools.

    Hi Marie,

Yes i will be releasing new versions of socialmail. Development is a little slow at the moment as I’m in the middle of writting assignments (not sure how great an idea it was to start my masters now)

Work on socialmail should pick up in a month or two
