SocialMail v0.12 out and about
by Daniel on Jan.19, 2010, under SocialMail
After a bit of work the SocialMail code has been tidied up and I’m ready for another release. But this is more than just a admin release, it’s also bringing a few new features:
- Context menus for most parts of the sidepanel, includes
- Add, modify, remove phone numbers & urls
- Copy any of the displayed data
- Save attachments
- Skype integration
- You can now launch a skype call directly from socialmail by double clicking on any collected (or added) phone number in the sidepanel. You need to enable this in the SocialMail options window and specify a default Country for numbers that don’t know have an international prefix. Of course you need to have Skype installed for this to work.
I hope you all enjoy this release, please post your comments to let me know how its working for you. Download here: socialMail-0.12

Just a quick thanks for this impressive add-on which keeps getting better.
I was just wondering if you can link an addres book to SocialMail or if it simply creates its own database?

SocialMail currently uses it’s own thunderbird Addressbook, you can see it if you look in the addressbook window. It made more sense to use the existing framework then develop a new one from scratch.
It’s not very useful as an addressbook at this stage but future versions will see an improvement in that area.

Just another outstanding release. I’ve it installed on my machine and my wife’s machine and it’s like a whole new program. I love all the quick reference and access to the common information- it’s so much easier!
Thank you.
Thanks,

Hi Daniel,
I’m trying to install your plug-in on Thunderbird 3.0.2 on Ubuntu 64 bit and it seems to not be firing. When I go in to configure it I’m not seeing anything pop up once the preferences button is pushed. I looked through my .thunderbird file and I don’t have the .sqlite file created either. Is there a forum to post questions back to you?

Hi Matt,
I am familiar with the issues with SocialMail and linux compatability and working on a fix, which should be available in the next day or two.
At present I am using GetSatisfaction as a feedback mechanism, so any issues/questions/requests can be raised there.

Hi,
I can’t seem to get the URLs to show in 0.12, am I doing something wrong?

Hi Mathieu,
The most likely cause is that the Global Indexer has been disabled. I rely on it heavilly throughout SocialMail, specifcally the part which handles indexing of email content. You can check that it’s enabled by going to the advanced tab in the Thunderbird options window. Be warned that if you enable it and have a well established mailbox, it will take a while to index everything. Once it is up-to-date SocialMail will start grabbing url’s from emails as they are viewed.
Note, however, that SocialMail will only try to search an email once, even if it fails, it will NOT try to search the same email again. So only new emails will be searched

Hi,
some ideas for further developement:
* get user images from GoogleMail
* create a filter for URLs (because some emailproviders always include ads in the signature)
* easier way to choose an image for the contact
btw. my contactdata from my normal Adressbook are not shown is this normal or am I missing something?
nice work btw.

Thanks for the Feedback,
I’ll have a look at those ideas for future versions, I’m always looking for ways to make SocialMail better and more usable.
With regards to your query, no you’re probably not missing anything, SocialMail pulls very little from the AddressBook at this stage, that will change as we evolve the product. For example the new version I’m about to publish will display phone numbers from addressbook entries. Is there particular information you would like to see in the SM Panel?

Daniel

for me telephone numbers (all of them)
and home address are the most relevant
maybe homepage for some other people
and I think it would be nice if one could change the size of the windows (I have enough space)
send/received is not counted by the mail index is it?
